Many of our portfolio companies consider it a high priority, and while it can be quite challenging, it can have a significant impact in some cases. Despite the fact that every organizationโs journey is different, most successful paths recognize that Cloud cost management is a collective journey. Additionally, Cloud costs must be correlated with business KPIs. In principle, costs cannot be driven down at the expense of meeting business objectives. Following are paths that assist our portfolio companies in optimizing their cloud environments. ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ : usually a report\dashboard is configured in a way that reflects all relevant information. Aggregated (and tagged) by any metadata that it is important for you to track and allows you to precisely attribute costs. Saying that, it is also known that tagging is still a challenge. Based on the report / dashboard, the following optimizations are considered: ๐๐ซ๐๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐/๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ: explore alternatives that can impact cost, for example, move between event processing to batch processing, over-provisioned resources (lambda function with large maximum memory, DynamoDB with large Read-Write capacity, K8s Pods without limits, etc). ๐๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ : i.e change the underline technology for a more cost-effective technology, networking structure. Usually more time\resource demanding and need to be carefully valuated ๐ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ (#finops ) : saving plans, discounts etc. A number of our companies work with official cloud provider partners/resellers. Through this collaboration, our companies utilize their own FinOps inhouse solutions, receive expert architecture advice and substantial discounts. The majority of the services are free. Getting recommendations on good ones is worth asking around. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ โ this involve process creation and education, for example to be more cost-sensitive, turn on machines only when needed, have an automate shutdown, policies that enforce all these policies etc As expected, cloud cost software solutions exist to meet these needs. According to a survey conducted by FinOps Foundation (link below), no single tool can serve as a panacea for all cloud spending. Most companies use a mix of native tooling from their cloud provider and third-party tools There are several Israeli companies listed among the top solutions used in this report, including Spot by NetApp, Zesty, and Finout. With the growing complexity and size of the problem, macro trends and the shortage of resources, we expect to see more companies attempting to address cloud optimization challenges.
